May 2025 Newsletter
See you later May! June’s ready to shine.
As we say goodbye to May’s blooming days and welcome the sunshine of June, I’m excited to share a few important updates and highlights from the past month in my work as your Sussex County Commissioner.
County Seed Library Launches at Older Americans Day
The County Seed Library was officially introduced to the public during this year’s Older Americans Day Celebration. The booth featured an engaging display and provided seniors with valuable information about the program, including how to access free seeds and participate in community gardening efforts.
The response was overwhelmingly positive, with many attendees picking up seed packets and expressing enthusiasm about the opportunity to grow their own food and flowers. The launch highlighted the growing interest in gardening and sustainable living among residents of all ages.
The event served as a successful platform to raise awareness of the County Seed Library and its mission to promote environmental education, food access, and community engagement.
Agriculture Internship Program Leads to Full-Time Hire at Hudson Farm
The greenhouse internship program at Hudson Farm—created in partnership with Sussex County Community College (SCCC)—continues to show strong outcomes. This spring, one of the participating students completed the internship and has since been hired full-time at the farm.
The program is designed to provide SCCC students with hands-on experience in greenhouse management, including plant care, crop planning, and sustainable growing practices—all during the academic year, which prominently overlaps with the traditional off-season for growing. By working in a temperature-controlled greenhouse, students gain direct experience alongside agricultural professionals, building real-world skills that translate into meaningful career opportunities.
This recent hire is a testament to the program’s success in preparing students for the workforce and strengthening local agriculture through education and practical training. With continued collaboration, the internship is poised to serve as a model for effective, career-connected learning in Sussex County.
