April 2024 Newsletter
Remember April Showers Bring May Flowers,
Welcome to May! As we transition into this vibrant month, I'm excited to share a Farmland Preservation Update for this past month of April. I'm delighted to announce that Sussex County has received its SECOND applicant farm for farmland preservation during April. This achievement marks a significant milestone, as it brings us halfway to our annual goal of four applications within just four months of my tenure. The success can be attributed to various factors, including the recent farmland preservation revitalization tour, unwavering support from the agricultural community, and substantial progress in revising the farmland preservation appraisal formula.
While celebrating this accomplishment, it's essential to remain focused on our ultimate aim of securing four applications by year-end. I'm committed to intensifying outreach efforts to ensure that farmers are fully aware of the remarkable opportunities available.
In another notable event, New Jersey's Secretary of Agriculture, Ed Wengryn, graciously attended Sussex County's Board of Agriculture Meeting in April. It was an honor to update him on our strides in farmland preservation and engage in fruitful discussions about enhancing agricultural programs at Sussex County Community College and Technical School.
Furthermore, I'm delighted to announce that, in cooperation with SCCC’s AG supervisor and Dean of Technical Occupations, we have finalized the curriculum and expectations for an internship program between Hudson Farms and SCCC. We are now awaiting feedback from Hudson Farms to further refine this valuable curriculum for our agricultural partnership.
Overall, the first four months of my tenure have shown significant strides in bolstering Sussex County’s agricultural and educational sectors. As we look forward, I am eager to build upon this progress in addition to further enhancing other sectors of county services to meet the evolving needs of our residents. Your steadfast support has been very valuable, and I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.
In line with these efforts, I am pleased to announce my 2nd Annual Pig Roast at the Sparta VFW Post #7248, which I will be hosting on June 6th from 6:00-8:00pm. This gathering not only serves as a platform to further my candidacy on the County Commissioner Board but also promises an evening filled with laughter, good company, and delicious pork. Sincerely,
Jack DeGroot
