May 2024 Newsletter
Welcome to June!
I'm excited to share some updates with you from May. Last month, Hudson Farm and I met to finalize the details of a new internship pathway for Sussex County Community College (SCCC) students. This agricultural partnership will allow one to two students each semester to complete internships during the fall and spring in Hudson Farm’s temperature controlled Green House. The internship will align with the curriculum taught by SCCC’s Agriculture Director during the course of the semester. Following our discussion in May, we plan to launch this initiative and send students to Hudson Farm starting this Fall 2024 semester.
Additionally, myself and SCCC have been in talks with Check Point, a leading software and cybersecurity company. Check Point offers partnerships with higher education institutions through their Secure Academy program, providing a hands-on learning curriculum to prepare students for careers in cybersecurity. This partnership is cost-free for the college and the county, offering SCCC students direct job opportunities at Check Point or with affiliated companies. This initiative aligns with my goal of enhancing SCCC programs to benefit students, especially those aiming to enter the workforce after two years of study. We aim to launch this partnership this upcoming Fall 2024 semester.
Revisiting my third goal from our reorganization meeting on January 1st, which focused on supporting and improving programs offered by the Division of Senior Services, I'm excited to share some progress. In May, I identified an opportunity to promote an additional program within Senior Services in collaboration with our county library services. Throughout the month, I engaged with our county senior service workers, librarians, and affiliated nonprofits to gather feedback, comments, and recommendations. This collaborative process has laid a solid foundation for the program's development. Once the program is secured in June, I will be thrilled to share specific details. If you're interested, please feel free to contact me directly about the initiative.
Lastly, a reminder: TOMORROW is my 2nd Annual Pig Roast at the Sparta VFW Post #7248, from 6:00-8:00 PM. This event supports my candidacy for the County Commissioner Board and promises an evening of unity, great company, and delicious food. Sincerely,
Jack DeGroot
