October Newsletter 2025
Hello November, Goodbye October!
As we close the chapter on October and the election season, I want to take a moment to reflect, not only on the campaign cycle we’ve just completed, but also on the meaningful progress we’ve made together for Sussex County. With each passing month, I’m reminded how fortunate I am to serve as your Sussex County Commissioner and to work alongside so many dedicated residents who care deeply about our community’s future.
HUGE SUCCESS: Farmland Preservation Referendum Passes
The unofficial results are in and they tell a powerful story. Sussex County voters showed overwhelming support, with 81% voting in favor of extending the Farmland Preservation, Recreation, and Open Space Trust Fund for another ten years! This is a tremendous step forward for the future of Sussex County. As an advocate for farmland preservation and open space initiatives, I couldn’t be prouder of our community’s commitment to protecting and enhancing the farms, parks, and natural spaces that make our County so special.
Sussex County Agriculture Forum: Growing Our Future
Last month, I had the privilege of moderating the Sussex County Agriculture Forum, hosted by Sussex and Warren County Community Colleges. Farmers, educators, and community leaders came together to discuss the future of agriculture in our region, and the event was a great success, fostering collaboration and shared services ideas. As both a Commissioner and a farmer, I spoke about how agriculture supports our economy, environment, and communities, and how working together across counties and sectors is essential to keeping New Jersey the Garden State. We discussed strengthening local markets, preserving farmland, and expanding agritourism, including updates to the Four Seasons of Agriculture program, which highlights the diversity of Sussex County’s farms year-round.
The forum emphasized keeping food local, supporting sustainable farming policies, and building partnerships between farms, schools, and local governments. I’m proud of the progress we’re making and look forward to continuing this work to support farmers, families, and the long-term vitality of agriculture in Sussex County.
Approved: Open Space Trails Program Adjustments
Last month, the Board of County Commissioners approved proposed improvements to the Open Space Trails Program, and I’m proud to share these updates! As liaison to the Open Space Committee in 2024, I worked closely with local officials and community members to foster the discussions that shaped these improvements. Key updates include:
$25,000 awards for individual municipalities
$50,000 awards for joint projects between municipalities
New collaborative category for larger regional initiatives
These changes reflect thoughtful feedback from municipalities and represent a responsible step forward in growing the program. By reducing administrative burdens and encouraging regional partnerships, we’re helping towns and organizations work together to enhance trail connectivity and recreation opportunities throughout Sussex County.
You’re Invited: Jack DeGroot’s 2nd Annual Holiday Party
With the General Election now behind us, I want to take a moment to thank our community for your continued support and engagement. As Sussex County looks to the future, I’m honored to share that I’ll be up next on the ballot, and I’m as motivated as ever to continue earning your trust and working hard for our County’s success.
